The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has asked Google to strengthen its efforts to prevent illegal betting and gambling promotions from appearing across its platforms.
The request was made during a meeting at the BTRC headquarters in Dhaka between BTRC Chairman Maj Gen Md Emdad ul Bari and Google's South Asia Policy Head, Kyle Gardner.
Bangladesh asks Google for stronger action
The BTRC chairman said criminals are exploiting Google's services to promote illegal gambling activities and called for more decisive action against prohibited advertisements.
The commission recommended using advanced technical measures, including artificial intelligence, to detect such content and remove it promptly once it appears online.
The meeting also covered the tech giant's potential expansion of services in Bangladesh. Discussions included a possible local payment system, infrastructure development, an AI model lab, training for Bangladeshi engineers, and support for local startups.
Representatives said the company was interested in exploring these areas and strengthening cooperation with the BTRC and other government bodies. Plans for a local office remain constrained for now, although the possibility may be considered in the future.
Paid search and gambling advertising
The concerns surrounding online gambling promotion also extend to paid search, where betting and casino businesses can seek visibility through advertising.
PPC betting campaigns can place betting services prominently in search results, while Google Ads betting can provide another route for reaching potential customers.
Where such advertising is permitted, operators must comply with applicable laws and advertising requirements.
Casino businesses face similar considerations in jurisdictions where their services are legal. PPC casino campaigns can promote licensed casino services through paid search, while Google Ads casino can offer another way to reach audiences.
PPC betting and Google Ads betting can thus be part of a broader digital advertising landscape in which gambling businesses must navigate platform policies and local regulations. PPC betting may also be considered alongside other paid-search approaches where permitted.
